Exploring a new city can always be a fun adventure so we have decided to highlight 4 activities you can do around Santo Domingo. Let’s jump right in!
1. Zona Colonial
Zona Colonial or ‘The Colonial Zone’ is a popular area with around 300 historical monuments and plenty to see and do. A great activity to get around Zona Colonial with ease is to rent a bike from Zona Bici and pedal your way throughout the historical city. You can check out our previous blog about fun things to do in Zona Colonial here.
2. The 3 Eyes National Park ( Los Tres Ojos )
This is a wonderful place to go experience! Los Tres Ojos is a giant cave just outside the city that has 3 limestone caves, each with a lagoon and a river running through it. It is quite the site to see because it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the entire country and it is not man-made. The caves are open from 9am-5pm daily and you can experience all of it within 2-3 hours. Swimming is not allowed, you can explore on foot or in a boat for less than 1 US Dollar.
3. Malecon
The Malecon is a great place to go relax on the weekend with people out sharing food and having drinks, walking around, taking pictures, it’s all very lively and entertaining and great for people watching! It’s free to! If you get tired of the Malecon there are some casinos you can visit across the street, they span part of the Malecon near Zona Colonial. Merengue and Bachata dancing happens regularly, maybe you can get a lesson and buy the teacher a beer!
4. Boca Chica
Boca Chica is the closest beach to Santo Domingo, I suggest taking a Uber or renting a car. A bus will take you roughly one and a half to two and a half hours because of all the stops and you might even have to change buses. Uber cost is around 8-10 US Dollars, one way. The water here is crystal clear and is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! The restaurants are priced well and I recommend trying The Boca Breeze, towards the east side of the beach. Great place to relax, good food and service. During the night the town gets kinda gritty so if you are staying then I suggest staying at a small hotel called Frio Hot. It’s worth every penny, the food is amazing, service is good and the rooms are nice.
So there you have it! The top 4 things I think you should see while you are in Santo Domingo. If you have any questions about Santo Domingo reach out to us and we will help you out.
